HOSTED EXPEDITION VOYAGE
Join Angela Hughes and the BYU Founders community June 5–13, 2027 in Svalbard aboard MS Spitsbergen with HX Expeditions. This is one of those journeys that genuinely changes how you see the world. The Arctic in spring is unlike anything else, the light returns, the wildlife is active, and the landscapes are breathtaking in a way photographs simply cannot capture.
You are right there in the fjords, surrounded by polar bears on sea ice, watching glaciers calve into the water, and sailing above the 80th parallel in a way only a small expedition ship can take you. The pace is immersive, the setting is extraordinary, and this is one of the most meaningful ways to experience the natural world.
Angela will be onboard hosting, connecting, and sharing everything she loves about this part of the world. This journey is designed to bring together members of the BYU Founders community and like minded travelers for a shared experience centered around exploration, connection, and unforgettable moments in the Arctic.
This special expedition is designed for members of the BYU Founders community and like minded individuals who have a genuine interest in the BYU Founders mission, community, and spirit of lifelong learning, leadership, exploration, and meaningful connection.
Because these expedition ships are very small, availability is extremely limited and cabins will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. We encourage those who are interested to reach out early, as these voyages often sell out well in advance.
The BYU Founders Group, part of the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the BYU Marriott School of Business, brings together entrepreneurs, investors, tech leaders, alumni, and supporters who are committed to helping student innovators build what comes next.
This Svalbard expedition creates an opportunity for members of the BYU Founders community and like minded travelers to experience one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations together.

Through the Rollins Center, this community helps fuel student programs, entrepreneurial development, and opportunities that support the next generation of founders.
The community includes practicing entrepreneurs, successful alumni, tech leaders, donors, and supporters who help maintain BYU’s leadership in business creation.
Members have opportunities to mentor student startups, offer feedback, share networks, and support students as they develop ideas into real ventures.
Contributions help support programs such as Miller Grants, student entrepreneurship resources, Creators Club, idea development, and early-stage company building.

MS Spitsbergen is a purpose-built expedition vessel operated by HX Expeditions. Designed specifically for Arctic exploration, she carries just 150 guests with a highly experienced international crew. Refurbished in 2025, she offers intimate, high-quality expedition experiences in Svalbard and the high Arctic.
Spring is one of the finest seasons in Svalbard. The sea ice is still intact, providing ideal hunting grounds for polar bears and making sightings far more likely. The returning Arctic sun creates extraordinary light and dramatic sunsets, while the landscape retains its dramatic winter snowfields. Fewer ships and quieter landings make for a more authentic expedition experience.
This expedition is ideal for curious, adventure-minded travelers who want a genuine connection with the natural world. Whether you're a first-time Arctic visitor or a seasoned expedition traveler, MS Spitsbergen's intimate scale and expert team create an experience that rewards curiosity at every level. It's especially popular with couples, solo travelers, and small groups of friends.
120 or more days before departure: No cancellation fee. 90–119 days: 15% of gross fare. 60–89 days: 50%. 30–59 days: 75%. 29 days or fewer: 100%. All cancellations must be received in writing. Third-party costs for flights, hotels, and transfers will be passed on as incurred. We strongly recommend travel insurance.
The expedition is fully all-inclusive: round-trip economy flights from Oslo to Longyearbyen, all transfers, one pre-cruise overnight in Longyearbyen with dinner and breakfast, the Spitsbergen Experience excursion on Day 2 with lunch, all meals and non-alcoholic beverages aboard MS Spitsbergen, expert Expedition Team lectures, and all Zodiac landing activities.
Spring is the best season for polar bear encounters in Svalbard, as the sea ice provides the hunting grounds they need. HX's Expedition Team monitors real-time ice drift, wildlife movement, and weather patterns to maximize every opportunity. While sightings can never be guaranteed, the spring timing and small-ship access to remote areas significantly increases the chances. HX has been navigating these waters since 1896.
If conditions allow, MS Spitsbergen will sail north to cross the 80th parallel — placing you at the very edge of the polar ice cap. This is an attempt rather than a guarantee, as conditions depend on ice drift and weather. If the ice edge is not reachable, the Expedition Team will deliver an adapted itinerary exploring Svalbard's spectacular fjords and coastline.
Final payment is due on March 7, 2027 for all guests. A 15% deposit is required within 7 days of adding names to the booking. Deposits are fully refundable prior to 120 days before sailing. All payment details will be provided on your invoice.
Yes — we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for this expedition, including coverage for trip interruption, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, flight delays, and missed embarkation. Because this journey includes remote Arctic destinations and changing conditions, travel protection can provide additional peace of mind.
You may review our recommended travel protection option here: Travel Protection Resources.
The expedition begins in Oslo, Norway (OSL). Round-trip economy flights from Oslo to Longyearbyen (LYR) are included in the package. Most international travelers will connect through Oslo on their way in. We recommend arriving in Oslo at least one night before your departure to Longyearbyen.
For U.S. travelers visiting Svalbard, a valid U.S. passport is required. At this time, American citizens do not need a tourist visa for short stays in either Norway or Svalbard.
It is important to note that while Svalbard is part of Norway, it exists outside of the Schengen Zone. Most travelers reach Svalbard by flying through mainland Norway, typically via Oslo or Tromsø, before continuing north to Longyearbyen.
Because U.S. citizens may enter Norway visa free for tourism purposes for up to 90 days, there is generally no separate visa requirement for visiting Svalbard.
We recommend that your passport have at least six months of validity remaining beyond your travel dates. Travelers should also be aware that immigration and customs procedures may occur when traveling between mainland Norway and Svalbard due to Svalbard’s special status outside of Schengen.
Beginning in late 2026, the European ETIAS authorization system is expected to launch for U.S. travelers visiting Europe, including Norway. However, this requirement is not currently active.
As always, entry requirements can change, and travelers are responsible for ensuring they meet all passport and documentation requirements prior to departure.
